Kilombero Sugar Company Limited (KSCL) is one of the largest sugar producers in Tanzania, located in the fertile Kilombero Valley in Morogoro Region. Established in 1960, the company plays a pivotal role in the country’s sugar industry, contributing significantly to domestic supply and reducing dependency on imports. KSCL operates two sugar estates and mills, producing hundreds of thousands of tonnes of sugar annually, making it a key driver of Tanzania’s economy.
The company is jointly owned by Illovo Sugar Africa, the Government of Tanzania, and minority stakeholders, reflecting a strong public-private partnership. Beyond sugar production, Kilombero Sugar works closely with outgrower farmers, supporting over 8,000 smallholder cane growers who supply a substantial portion of the company’s raw materials. Through training, inputs, and extension services, KSCL has become a catalyst for rural development, improving livelihoods across the Kilombero Valley.
KSCL is also committed to sustainability, with investments in modern technology, renewable energy, and environmentally friendly practices. Its operations generate electricity from bagasse, a sugarcane by-product, contributing to Tanzania’s energy mix. By combining industrial efficiency, community empowerment, and environmental responsibility, Kilombero Sugar Company Limited stands as a model agribusiness that continues to support national development and food security.
