HAKIELIMU
Introduction to HakiElimu:
HakiElimu is an independent civil society organization committed to human rights and education. We believe in an open, just and democratic Tanzania where all people enjoy the right to education that promotes equity, creativity and critical thinking. Founded in 2001, we facilitate and promote the transformation of education, both in and out of schools, by influencing policy-making and effective implementation. We stimulate public dialogue and social change, conduct research, policy analysis and advocacy, and collaborate with partners to advance participation, accountability, transparency, and social justice. Over two decades, HakiElimu has been at the forefront of spurring citizen participation and education reform. We are now seeking to recruit our fourth Executive Director to build on solid achievements and bring fresh energy and ideas to revitalize our work.
Overall Responsibility:
The Executive Director (ED) is the leader of the organization. With the oversight of the Board and Members of HakiElimu, the ED provides strategic leadership, guides and motivates staff, ensures systems are effective, efficient and accountable, and represents HakiElimu externally to advance its mission. The ED plays a critical role in fundraising, cultivating relationships with partners, and safeguarding the vision, effectiveness and sustainability of the organization.

Key Responsibilities:
National and International Influence and Advocacy
- Strengthen the vision of critical and creative education in a democratic society.
- Inspire citizen participation and government reforms through evidence-based advocacy.
- Build relationships and coalitions with leaders nationally, regionally and globally.
- Provide thought leadership and raise the profile of HakiElimu through media and events.
Strategic Development
- Lead the development and implementation of a new organizational strategy.
- Adapt approaches to maximize meaningful impact at scale.
- Build strong funding partnerships for long-term sustainability.
Leadership and Organizational Culture
- Work closely with the Board to ensure effective governance.
- Collaborate with staff through participatory leadership.
- Champion innovation, accountability, learning and continuous improvement.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Tanzanian national with at least 10 years’ leadership experience involving government, CSOs and citizens.
- Master’s degree strongly preferred (exceptional bachelor’s degree holders considered).
- Respected leader with independence of thought and integrity.
- Proven engagement with senior civil society and government leaders.
- Strong motivational and communication skills in Swahili and English.
- Track record in public speaking, fundraising and building alliances.
- Commitment to citizen participation, gender equality and inclusion.
