Role Objective
The role holder is responsible for leading the establishment and management of Mustard Agro Ventures Avocado Estate (Avo Forest Farm), ensuring the successful setup of farm infrastructure and operations. The primary objective is to optimize productivity, quality, and sustainability while also adhering to global agricultural standards such as Global Good Agricultural Practices (Global G.A.P) and GlobalG.A.P Risk Assessment on Social Practice (Global G.R.A.S.P).
Duties and Responsibilities
- Farm Setup: Lead the setup and development of the avocado orchard, including land preparation, planting, and infrastructure establishment. Oversee the implementation of irrigation systems, fencing, and other necessary farm infrastructure.
- Estate Management: Manage day-to-day operations of the avocado orchard, ensuring optimal tree health and productivity. Develop and implement orchard management plans, including pruning, fertilization, and pest control strategies.
- Crop Monitoring and Analysis: Monitor the health and growth of avocado trees, conducting regular assessments and data analysis. Identify trends, issues, and opportunities for improvement, and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Harvest Planning and Execution: Plan and coordinate avocado harvests, ensuring efficient picking and post-harvest handling procedures. Manage harvest labor and equipment to meet production targets and maintain fruit quality.
- Budgeting and Resource Management: Develop and manage budgets for farm operations, including expenses for labor, equipment, and inputs. Ensure efficient utilization of resources and optimize costs.
- Team Leadership and Training: Recruit, train, supervise, and motivate farm staff, providing guidance and support to ensure a productive work environment. Foster a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
- Infrastructure Maintenance: Oversee the maintenance and repair of farm infrastructure, including irrigation systems, equipment, and buildings.
- Compliance, Record Keeping, and Reporting: Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, permits, and safety standards. Ensure relevant forms are filled timely and accurately. Prepare regular reports on farm performance.
- Overall Estate Management: Take charge of estate security to protect company property and personnel.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, or related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in farm management, preferably with a focus on avocado farming. Experience with Global Good Agricultural Practices (Global G.A.P) and GlobalG.A.P Risk Assessment on Social Practice (Global G.R.A.S.P) certification processes.
- Technical Knowledge: Expertise in avocado orchard management practices, including planting, pruning, and disease control. Familiarity with irrigation systems, soil management, and pest management strategies. Ability to operate farm tools and machinery.
- Leadership and Communication: Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate a team. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written in English and Kiswahili.
- Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Proficiency in data analysis and decision-making to optimize farm operations. Ability to troubleshoot issues and implement practical solutions.
- Organizational and Planning Abilities: Exceptional organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and priorities efficiently.
