ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE MEDIA
The Tanzania National Nurses Association (TANNA) is a national professional body for nurses, established in 1972 under the Societies Ordinance Act, 1954 (Rule 5). The primary goal of the association is to advocate for nurses' interests and promote professionalism in the nursing profession in providing quality health services, as well as ensuring that professionals deliver services with compassion to patients and clients amidst the challenges that affect nursing services in the country. The association also promotes sound policies aimed at improving health services.
In light of the association's aforementioned goals, there has been a significant rise in complaints from nurses across the country regarding the salary structure and its effective implementation, which has been inconsistent with changes and developments for a long time since 2013. Nurses have been urging the Government to implement significant improvements in their salary structure.
It is worth noting that on May 9, 2025, during the Nurses' General Meeting in Mkoani Iringa, attended by a total of 1,576 nurses, a question was directed to the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Minister of State, Office of the President, Public Service Management and Good Governance, Hon. Deus Sangu Nsibiru, who was the Guest of Honour. The Minister responded as follows, quoted verbatim: "When I arrived here earlier, the Prime Minister, Hon. Kassim Majaliwa Hassan, addressed the issue and said that he had brought the greetings of the President, and so, my brothers and sisters, all the nurses who are here, as I said, the President has allowed us to implement what we submitted to him, which is complete. Therefore, I promise to give you good news with a new structure that will take effect from July 2025."
However, the silence so far, as described by the Honourable Prime Minister, has left many nurses with many questions, as the Government has not fulfilled its promise at a time when we were prepared and ready to use the new official salary structure starting from July 2025. Failure to receive feedback from the Government on this matter has led to growing anxiety among nurses, thereby contributing to the widespread perception that the Government has not fulfilled its promise, which it made several times as a form of assurance. The leaders have done their part to follow up on this matter, but without success in getting the Government to implement its promises.
The leaders of the association are taking this opportunity to urge our Government, under the able leadership of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Samia Suluhu Hassan, not to discourage us, because a long time has passed since the challenge began. Furthermore, the Government is on record as having promised a new official implementation structure starting July 2025, which would have brought great benefits to the nurses. We do not believe that the silence is a deliberate act of disrespect to the nurses, but rather we believe that there are internal processes that are still underway on the matter. Therefore, we urge the Government to implement the promise it made in the Great Nurses' Meeting in Mkoani Iringa, May 2025, to boost the morale of nurses and professionals to continue providing quality services to the patients and to increase confidence in the ability of nurses to conduct more advanced professional training to improve services and professionalism in the country. We believe that the Government will respond to our request and implement it once and for all.
Furthermore, the leaders are taking this opportunity to inform the nurses and professionals in the country that we are continuing to follow up on this matter, and we will inform you accordingly.
Therefore, we urge you to remain calm and continue to perform your duties professionally to help our patients and clients.
We wish you well in your duties and thank you very much.
