BACKGROUND
Dar es Salaam University Press (DUP) was re-established in March 2017 to take over the activities previously conducted by the Dar es Salaam University Press (1996) Limited (DUP 1996 Ltd). DUP is one of the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) Strategic Companies mandated to publish all academic and scholarly works, as well as all official documents of the University and external customers. UDSM, since its inception, has charted distinct pathways to academic excellence; thus, DUP has been playing a special role to make UDSM known in Tanzania and beyond. DUP functions include Publishing, Printing, Graphic Design and Book Selling. The Company produces scholarly books, journals, conference proceedings, university reports, calendars, prospectuses, almanacs, project proposals, research agendas, inaugural lectures, policies and procedures, strategic plans, business plans, action plans, as well as master’s and PhD theses/dissertations. DUP also provides services such as editing, proofreading, typesetting and graphic designing.

DUP vision is “to become a modern University press providing high-quality scholarly publications for inclusive and sustainable development”. DUP invites qualified and passionate individuals to apply for the following job positions on contract terms:

  1. EDITOR (TYPE SETTING) – 1 POST
    Working Station: Dar es Salaam University Press – UDSM Mwalimu Nyerere Main Campus

A. Position Summary
The Editor (Typesetting) is responsible for preparing, formatting, and refining manuscripts and other written materials for publication.

B. Key Duties and Responsibilities
(i) To format and typeset manuscripts according to DUP standards;
(ii) To apply appropriate typography and layout design;
(iii) To ensure consistency in style;
(iv) To review manuscripts for completeness;
(v) To proofread and correct errors;
(vi) To produce and revise proofs;
(vii) To prepare print-ready and digital files;
(viii) To collaborate with editors, designers, and printers;
(ix) To maintain accuracy in tables, images, and references;
(x) To ensure adherence to editorial style guides;
(xi) To conduct quality control checks;
(xii) To resolve typesetting issues;
(xiii) To keep templates updated;
(xiv) To manage file organization;
(xv) To participate in editorial meetings;
(xvi) To update oneself on publishing technologies;
(xvii) To perform any other assigned duties.

C. Key Skills
(i) Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, LaTeX, QuarkXPress;
(ii) Knowledge of typography and layout;
(iii) Attention to detail;
(iv) Ability to meet deadlines;
(v) Strong communication skills;
(vi) Teamwork skills;
(vii) Analytical and problem-solving skills;
(viii) Good organizational skills;
(ix) Ability to work in a dynamic environment.

D. Entry Qualifications and Experience
(i) Bachelor’s Degree in Publishing, Graphic Design, Linguistics, Kiswahili, Communication Studies or equivalent;
(ii) At least 3 to 5 years of experience in typesetting or editorial production.

  1. PRINTING TECHNICIAN – 1 POST
    Working Station: Dar es Salaam University Press – UDSM Mwalimu Nyerere Main Campus

A. Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Printing and Binding
    (i) To operate small offset printing machines;
    (ii) To operate paper-cutting machines;
    (iii) To operate SORD, SORS, Goss-web, Speed Master, guillotine and book pressing;
    (iv) To operate hydraulic power systems;
    (v) To submit monthly printing reports;
    (vi) To report machine faults;
    (vii) To handle binds;
    (viii) To assemble printed products.

  2. Graphic Designing
    (i) To maintain prepress equipment;
    (ii) To prepare artwork;
    (iii) To assist in CTP machine operation;
    (iv) To process files through workflow systems;
    (v) To print low-quantity jobs;
    (vi) To scan documents;
    (vii) To perform other assigned duties.

B. Key Skills and Experience
(i) Strong communication skills;
(ii) Ability to work collaboratively;
(iii) Analytical and problem-solving skills;
(iv) Attention to detail;
(v) Ability to assist in minor repairs;
(vi) Skills in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop;
(vii) Ability to work in a dynamic environment;
(viii) At least 3 years of experience.

C. Entry Qualifications
Form IV/VI Certificate and Ordinary Diploma (NTA 6) in Graphic Arts and Printing, Printing Technology, or Binding Technology.

  1. PRINTING ARTISAN – 1 POST
    Working Station: Dar es Salaam University Press – UDSM Mwalimu Nyerere Main Campus

A. Duties and Responsibilities
(i) To operate printing machines;
(ii) To operate paper cutting machines;
(iii) To operate SORD, SORS, Goss-web, Speed Master;
(iv) To operate hydraulic lifting systems;
(v) To assist in monthly reports;
(vi) To handle binds;
(vii) To collate, cut and trim papers;
(viii) To assemble printed products;
(ix) To prepare artwork;
(x) To assist in CTP process;
(xi) To process files through workflows;
(xii) To scan documents;
(xiii) To perform related duties.

B. Key Skills and Experience
Same as Printing Technician.

C. Entry Qualifications
Form IV/VI and Certificate (NTA 5)/Trade Test II in Printing, Binding Technology or Graphic Arts.
