ANNOUNCEMENT OF TEMPORARY EMPLOYMENT (INTERNSHIP) FOR 50 POSITIONS UNDER A SPECIAL PROGRAM TO PROMOTE CASHEW PRODUCTION IN THE COUNTRY

INTRODUCTION
Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) and the Cashew Nut Board of Tanzania (CBT), is implementing a program to engage youth in the "Building a Better Tomorrow" (BBT) initiative for cashew farming. Under the BBT-Cashew program, SUA-MoA-CBT has prepared a one-year internship plan to hire 50 Agricultural Extension Officers and Assistant Agricultural Extension Officers for a special program to promote cashew production in the country. The program will be implemented during the 2025/2026 farming season as part of preparations for raw cashew production. The program will be carried out in the regions of Mtwara, Lindi, Ruvuma (Tunduru), and Pwani.

As part of the strategy to strengthen extension services in the country, the Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with SUA and other agricultural stakeholders, is implementing this special extension services program through young graduates in agricultural fields (BBT Agricultural Extension Entrepreneurship Scheme - BBT AEES). Through BBT-AEES, fifty (50) positions need to be filled by qualified graduates in agricultural fields to provide extension services for cashew production under an internship arrangement as follows:

1. Position: Agricultural Officer (10 Positions)

Key Responsibilities Include:
(a) Providing technical advice to farmers and other stakeholders in the cashew value chain by:
i. Educating farmers on best practices for cashew farming, including land preparation, farm maintenance, harvesting, value addition, storage, and marketing.
ii. Educating and supervising the quality of raw cashew nuts from the farm to the factory.
iii. Monitoring and ensuring farmers adhere to best practices for cashew farming.
iv. Preparing and submitting weekly reports on cashew farming progress in the assigned area.
v. Identifying actual needs for inputs, including seeds/seedlings for farmers, and submitting them to the Cashew Nut Board of Tanzania.
vi. Supervising and ensuring distributed inputs reach farmers and are used in their cashew farms.

(b) Registering cashew farmers and other stakeholders, including input service providers, in the assigned area using the existing digital system.

(c) Supervising the distribution of subsidized cashew farming inputs provided by the government to farmers in the assigned area.

(d) Providing training on best practices for cashew farming, including the proper and safe use of pesticides.

(e) Supervising quality verification of cashew nuts at the primary cooperative society (AMCOS) level.

(f) Establishing demonstration farms and model farms in the assigned area.

(g) Preparing production estimates for raw cashew nuts based on the criteria of productive cashew trees in the season (Crop forecast).

(h) Collecting cashew data/statistics disaggregated by households/small processing groups and submitting them to the Cashew Nut Board of Tanzania.

(i) Identifying agricultural sector stakeholders in the assigned area and linking them with farmers to access their services.

(j) Ensuring each farmer has a record book to document services provided by various stakeholders, including agricultural extension officers.

(k) Collaborating with village leadership to select lead farmers.

(l) Providing advice on other crops grown by farmers in the village/assigned area.

(m) Conducting end-of-season assessments of cashew production and processing in the assigned area and submitting reports to the Cashew Nut Board of Tanzania.

(n) Supervising assistant extension officers in the assigned area.

(o) Performing any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:
A young graduate in agriculture at the degree level with the following qualifications:
i. Must be a trustworthy, honest, dedicated Tanzanian with good interpersonal skills.
ii. Must be between 18 and 40 years old.
iii. Must hold a degree in Agricultural Science (Agriculture General), Agronomy, Horticulture, or Crop Production from a government-recognized institution.
iv. Must not be employed or dismissed from public service.
v. Must have no criminal record.
vi. Must be willing to work in various rural areas.
vii. Must be capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
viii. Must be willing to work under a temporary contract and receive a monthly stipend as specified in the contract.
ix. Must be willing to sign a performance-based agreement for the specified season.
x. Experience in cashew farming is an added advantage.

2. Position: Assistant Agricultural Officer (40 Positions)

Key Responsibilities Include:
(a) Providing technical advice to farmers and other stakeholders in the cashew value chain by:

vii. Must be capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
viii. Must be willing to work under a temporary contract and receive a monthly stipend as specified in the contract.
