Reports to: Loan Manager

Department: Operations (Loan Department)

General Job Description

The Loan Officer is responsible for coordinating loan services for customers and ensuring loans are issued in accordance with the institution’s financial policies and procedures. The Loan Officer will advise customers on suitable loan products, collect customer information, and analyze loan applications before making recommendations for approval.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Processing Loan Applications

Responsibilities:

  • Receive and process loan applications from customers.
  • Collect and verify customer information, including identification documents, financial information, and business details.
  • Conduct financial analysis and prepare recommendations for loan approval.

2. Providing Financial Advice and Customer Education

Responsibilities:

  • Advise customers on available loan products and repayment methods.
  • Educate customers on responsible loan utilization and financial management.
  • Help customers understand loan conditions and repayment obligations.

3. Conducting Risk Assessment

Responsibilities:

  • Assess the creditworthiness of each applicant before loan approval.
  • Evaluate repayment ability using customer records, financial information, and payment history.
  • Apply appropriate risk assessment methods based on financial and business analysis.

4. Preparing Loan Reports

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and submit reports on loans issued by the institution.
  • Produce monthly reports on loan performance and customer loan portfolios.
  • Monitor loan performance and provide progress reports.

5. Loan Collection and Recovery

Responsibilities:

  • Follow up on loan repayments and address overdue accounts.
  • Engage customers with overdue loans and negotiate repayment solutions.

6. Monitoring Customer Loan Performance

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure loans are properly managed and customers comply with repayment terms.
  • Monitor loan performance regularly.
  • Resolve loan-related issues and ensure customers receive the support they need.

7. Improving Loan Service Delivery

Responsibilities:

  • Recommend improvements to loan systems and service delivery processes.
  • Propose policies that improve customer service and loan management.
  • Contribute to initiatives that enhance the quality of loan services.

8. Building and Maintaining Customer Relationships

Responsibilities:

  • Build strong relationships with customers through financial support and regular guidance.
  • Maintain close communication with customers to address challenges and provide appropriate solutions.

9. Ensuring Compliance with Financial Laws and Regulations

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure all lending activities comply with applicable financial laws and institutional regulations.
  • Stay informed about legal and regulatory requirements governing lending.
  • Ensure all loans are processed according to microfinance regulations.

10. Maintaining Loan Records

Responsibilities:

  • Keep complete and accurate records of all loans and monitor repayment progress.
  • Ensure loan records are properly maintained and easily accessible for reporting and auditing.

11. Conducting Loan Audits and Performance Monitoring

Responsibilities:

  • Review loan portfolios to ensure loans are performing as expected.
  • Monitor loan performance and recommend corrective measures where necessary.

12. Participating in Market Research and Business Development

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in market research to identify business development opportunities and attract new customers.
  • Support the introduction of new products and improved services for customers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
  • Good understanding of financial and lending regulations.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in both English and Kiswahili.
  • Proficiency in computer applications related to finance and business management.
  • Ability to identify lending opportunities while ensuring compliance with company policies.
  • Strong decision-making skills, especially in loan assessment and risk evaluation.
  • Valid driving license is an added advantage.
