- BACKGROUND
The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) is a Parastatal Organization established by an Act of Parliament No. 23 of 1979 (CAP.59, R.E.2002) and became operational in 1980. NIMR-Mwanza Research Centre is one of the NIMR Centers located in Mwanza region. The Centre is currently conducting research on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as well as other diseases of public health importance. The National Institute for Medical Research is looking for the qualified, experienced and well-motivated personnel to fill various positions at NIMR Mwanza Centre.
- LINK-CVD RESEARCH PROJECT
NIMR in collaboration with Rigshospitalet, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), is conducting a study to understand the links between infections, malnutrition and early onset of cardiovascular diseases in Tanzania (LINK-CVD study). This study will involve adults who participated in previous cohorts conducted in the years 2016-2025. Based on funding for this study, the institute is inviting applications from motivated and suitably qualified Tanzanian candidates to fill the following positions.
A. JOB POSITION: Clinical Officer (2 posts)
REPORTING TO: Principal Investigator
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
i. To perform clinical examinations;
ii. To collect clinical data using approved questionnaires;
iii. To provide results to the participants of the laboratory tests where necessary;
iv. To oversee timely laboratory testing of study samples;
v. To provide clinical care or referral of study participants when necessary; and
vi. To perform any other job-related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
QUALIFICATION AND COMPETENCE
i. Diploma in Medicine from recognized institution and holding a practicing license from the Medical Council of Tanganyika;
ii. At least two years’ work experience in clinical research;
iii. Excellent written and oral communication skills in Kiswahili and English;
iv. Computer literacy; and
v. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training
B. JOB POSITION: Medical Officer (1 post)
REPORTING TO: Principal Investigator
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
i. To perform clinical examinations;
ii. To collect clinical data using approved questionnaires with electronic devices;
iii. To provide laboratory results to the participants where necessary;
iv. To perform spirometry tests and interpret the test results;
v. To provide clinical care or referral of study participants when necessary; and
vi. To perform any other job-related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor
QUALIFICATION AND COMPETENCE
i. Degree in Medicine from a recognized institution and holding a practicing license from the Medical Council of Tanganyika;
ii. At least two years’ work experience in clinical research;
iii. Excellent written and oral communication skills in Kiswahili and English;
iv. Computer literacy; and
v. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training
C. JOB POSITION: Assistant Nursing Officer (2 posts)
REPORTING TO: Principal Investigator
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
i. To conduct phlebotomy for various tests;
ii. To conduct clinical examinations of recruited participants;
iii. To conduct anthropometric measurements among recruited participants;
iv. To administer data collection activities using electronic devices; and
v. To perform any other job-related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor
QUALIFICATION AND COMPETENCE
i. A Diploma-level training in nursing from a recognized training institution, and holding a practicing license;
ii. At least two years’ work experience in nursing or clinical research;
iii. Experience in drawing blood for investigations;
iv. Experience in conducting anthropometric measurements;
v. Excellent written and oral communication skills in Kiswahili and English;
vi. Computer literacy; and
vii. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training
D. JOB POSITION: Nutritionist (1 post)
REPORTING TO: Principal Investigator
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
I. To conduct anthropometric measurements on study participants;
II. To conduct a diet assessment among recruited participants; and
III. To perform any other job-related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor
QUALIFICATION AND COMPETENCE
i. A Bachelor's degree in clinical human nutrition or related subject from a recognized institution;
ii. At least two years’ work experience in nursing or clinical research;
iii. Experience in conducting anthropometric measurements;
iv. Excellent written and oral communication skills in Kiswahili and English;
v. Computer literacy; and
vi. Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training
E. JOB POSITION: Sonographers (3 posts)
REPORTING TO: Principal Investigator
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
i. To conduct cardiovascular measurements, including but not limited to: pulse-wave velocity, electrocardiogram, and echocardiogram;
ii. To regularly review and follow all standard operating procedures of the study, particularly those for all cardiovascular measurements;
iii. To perform verbal interviews, including completing electronic case report forms;
iv. To perform medical examinations and investigations where necessary;
v. To facilitate clinical care for study participants;
vi. To assist in participant tracing as needed, including phone calls and tracking of missing participants where necessary;
vii. To participate in meetings and discussions regarding research progress and any other aspects of the study; and
viii. To perform any other job-related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor
QUALIFICATION AND COMPETENCE
i. A diploma holder in diagnostic radiology and must be registered;
ii. At least three years’ relevant experience performing echocardiography and working in a research project involving human subjects;
iii. Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to work as a team; and
iv. Certified in Good Clinical Practice (GCP) for the conduct of human research.
F. JOB POSITION: Research Assistant (1 post)
REPORTING TO: Principal Investigator
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
i. To conduct data collection from approved health research projects;
ii. To assist with data analysis and report writing activities;
iii. To assist registration and monitoring of implementation of approved health research in Tanzania;
iv. To participate in developing sound and fundable research proposals; and
v. To perform any other job-related duties as may be assigned by the supervisor
QUALIFICATION AND COMPETENCE
i. Holder of a bachelor's degree in health or health-related fields: Medical sociology, nursing, and microbiology, or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution with a minimum of an upper second class or an overall minimum grade B+ for unclassified degree.
TERMS OF SERVICE:
One-year contract which may be renewed based on performance and mutual agreement.
DUTY STATION:
The successful candidate will be based at NIMR Mwanza Centre and regularly visits at study sites.
COMPENSATION:
A competitive salary will be offered to the successful candidate as per project budget.
